"Playboy's Office Playmate" was working in the magazine's Subscription Department when Hefner, who was dating her at the time, persuaded her to pose for the centerfold. The legend was that she did it to earn an Addressograph machine for her office, but she recalls that story as a bit exaggerated. It was a major step, both for the magazine, which with her centerfold pioneered its "girl next door" tradition, and for Janet herself. "The pictures are very modest by today's standards," she observes from her home in Connecticut, "but back then they weren't." After appearing on a record three centerfolds, she married, moved to New England, had two daughters and earned a degree in nursing. Now retired, she enjoys life as a traditional grandmother.
