When Nancy Crawford, who lives in suburban New York State, received a letter from Hugh Hefner requesting her cooperation for "The Playmate Book," she showed it to a neighbor who insisted on writing a letter of her own to the book's author. "It's a little embarrassing, but maybe it will give you an idea of who I am today," Nancy reported. The neighbor, Elizabeth Schutt, wrote: "I have been Nancy's neighbor since early 1990, and from those first days on she has impressed me with her friendliness, her kindness and her warm heart. . . . She seemed to have a knack for knowing when I was too tired to cook or in need of a boost, and she'd arrive with culinary wonders that did wonders for my spirits. These gifts have continued through the years, as have the many other services Nancy has so often and readily offered: watching our apartment and taking in mail and messages when we're away, picking up items for us at the grocery, offering to drive us places when we've been without transportation, and making herself available for child care if we need it. "Countless times I've seen Nancy carrying food to someone, visiting someone in the hospital, trying to help someone make the best arrangements for taking care of a sick family member, driving someone to an appointment or trying however possible to make someone's life better. . . . When a person, or an animal, is in need, she's there to help out. She is a deeply kind person, and I feel very fortunate to be her neighbor."
